Economic History

The Department of Economic History at Umeå University study long run social and economic development. The research illuminates how individuals, families, companies and nations make difficult choices to use limited resources in order to meet various needs. Economic historians explore such choices in terms of e.g., productivity, equality and sustainability in a historical perspective.

The department has in recent years received external research grants from the Central Bank Treasury Fund, the Swedish Research Council, Vinnova, Handelsbankens Forskningsstiftelser, Swedish Council for Work Life Research etc. Researchers at the department participates in various international and national research networks.

Our vision is to contribute with knowledge, understanding and insights in the field of economic history. We communicate our results with the research community such as international peer review journals, books and conferences. As experts in commissions our results help decision makers to find solutions of real socio-economic and environmental problems.
